Orioles Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)  ...more ?

Jeremy Guthrie hasn't been challenging hitters, and the Orioles' de facto ace has been getting hit hard this season. Guthrie threw well Thursday but allowed two home runs among nine hits in seven innings against the Angels.

After the game, Hall of Fame pitcher and Orioles TV analyst Jim Palmer criticized Guthrie, saying: "When is the last time Jeremy Guthrie hit somebody? Think about it."

Guthrie has hit five batters this season. He's allowed 100 hits in 94 2/3 innings.

The Orioles have implemented an organization-wide theory of pitching to contact, but it seems as if Guthrie pitches away from it. He's been living on the outside corner, with his mistakes finding contact—hard contact.

Guthrie fell to 6-8 with Thursday's loss.

Nolan Reimold took a swing, and the ball soared off his bat into the sky. The ball was too high for Reimold to follow its path, so he looked at Washington left fielder Josh Willingham to try to get a read on the distance. Willingham couldn't track it either; he threw his arms up in bewilderment as he waited for it to land.

Bergesen, Orioles overwhelm Nationals 11-1 (AP)  ...more ?

Brad Bergesen struggled with the humidity and his command. His mechanics were spotty, his breaking ball ineffective.
